ACL Knee Injury

By COFAI • February 11, 2021 • Comments Off on ACL Knee Injury

WHAT IS IT?

By definition, ACL stands for anterior cruciate ligament. An ACL knee injury occurs when this ligament of the knee becomes torn or sprained. This is one of the major ligaments of the knee. It is usually caused by sporting activities that involve sudden changes in flexion of the knee.

HOW IS IT CAUSED?

During high profile sporting activities, such as football and golfing, the ligaments of the knee can stretch beyond the elastic limits causing tiny tears to develop. It can also be caused due to excessive jumping or activities that involve sudden starts and stops such as pivoting in fixed positions.

SYMPTOMS?

  • A popping sound can be heard when the ligament is torn.
  • Significant pain, soreness and rapid swelling at the site of injury.
  • Inability to perform knee extensions.
  • A feeling of instability to bear any form of weight.
  • Compromised range of motion.

TREATMENT

  • Applying ice to affected area.
  • Elevating the foot above the head

SURGERY

Approaches vary depending of the severity. Surgery is typically recommended for younger people where the damaged portion is removed and replaced with a graft.
