WHAT IS IT?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition of the hand caused by compression of the median nerves along the wrist. It occurs frequently in women between the ages of 30 – 60 years old.
WHAT CAUSES IT?
A regular carpal tunnel has limited space for the tendons and the median nerve to pass through. Therefore, any form of swelling leads to compression of that nerve.
SYMPTOMS
- Tingling and numbness in fingers or hand
- Tendency for weakness of the thumb or index finger.
- Burning and itching can also be present in all fingers.
- A general feeling of weakness in the hand.
- Shock like feelings that travel along the fingers.
- Symptoms may flare up when using your wrist at a bent position such as reading a book.
TREATMENT
Your doctor can check for this condition by performing a Tinel Sign test that involves tapping the palm side of the wrist.
Tests such as X-rays, Ultrasounds, Electromyograms and MRI’s can be done to observe your bones and tissues.
Treatment then depends on the progress level of your condition.
- Physiotherapy exercises to strengthen and help the nerves glide better.
- Immobilization of the wrist using a splint to prevent further strain and inflammation.
- Medication for pain as well as anti-inflammatories.
